First Walkers:

When to buy the 1st pair of shoes for your child

Sole Adventurer recognises that buying the 1st pair of shoes is a special and exciting time, and when your child is ready will guide you to make the best choice at the right time. However, do not rush into buying shoes; barefoot is best for all the time that your child is still needing to cruise the furniture and hold your hand for support; during this stage of development they are literally learning through their feet and simple soft soled shoes are perfect at this stage to protect and cover their feet.

Your child needs to have been walking confidently without support for at least 4-6 weeks before they are ready for their 1st pair of shoes. This will ensure that their balance and coordination has started to develop and they are confident in their independent movement.

Bobux Quest £59

Comfort

With the average 6 year old taking more than 12,000 steps per day, their school shoes need to provide all day comfort, durability and flexibility for a whole range of physical activities.

These shoes from Bobux, have a soft cell footbed for extra comfort.

School shoes have a tough job to do for tricky customers. Here are some of the things to look for and why:

  • Soft leather, including leather lining for maximum breathability – synthetic materials will make feet sweat, smell and slip inside the shoe, these shoes will lose form very quickly, may start to rot and cause damage to the feet. This may be a cheap option, but in the long run you will spend more on shoes that do not last.

  • Padding around the ankle and tongue area in a closed foot shoe, ensures the shoe does not rub or slip, and makes them super comfortable holding the foot securely in place.

  • The shoes need to be lightweight and well-constructed to allow freedom of movement, flexibility and durability.

  • Growing room, including space for the toes to wriggle. This doesn’t mean buying big, but buying wisely; at the right time in the school calendar, the time of day, and the right shape shoe for your child’s needs.
